About us

Which areas of law Lawyers List covers, where its limits are, and how to look up a lawyer's license and discipline record on your own.

Most people look for a lawyer after something has already happened: a crash, an arrest, a layoff, a letter from immigration or the death of a parent. That is a hard moment to start comparing law firms from nothing. Lawyers List groups the law firms of large US cities by area of law, so you can see quickly which firms spend their days on the kind of matter you have.

What you will find

Lists of law firms for personal injury, criminal defense, divorce, immigration, estate planning, employment, bankruptcy and workers' compensation, one list per area of law and city wherever enough firms do that work. Car accidents and DUI have city pages of their own, and inside a list you can show only the firms that take truck accident, medical malpractice, child custody or probate cases. Each firm has a page with the cases it handles, its offices, its office hours and its contact details. The lists cover large cities such as Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Denver and Seattle.

What we are not

Lawyers List is not a law firm and not a lawyer referral service, and nothing on it is legal advice. We cannot tell you whether you have a case, what it may be worth or which lawyer to hire. Using the site, or contacting a firm through it, does not create an attorney-client relationship with us or with any firm. A place on a list is not an endorsement. We do not book consultations, the public never pays us anything, and we do not check each lawyer's license ourselves, though the next section shows how to do it.

Checks you can make yourself

Every state has a public way to check that a lawyer is licensed and in good standing, usually through the state bar and in some states through the state's highest court. The same lookup shows any public discipline. Immigration law is federal, so an immigration lawyer licensed in any state can take your case. For most other matters the lawyer generally needs a license in the state where the case is.

Some states certify lawyers as specialists in particular areas of law, and a lawyer who claims a certification has to name the body that granted it. In immigration, a notary public, or notario, is not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. Besides attorneys, only accredited representatives of organizations recognized by the Department of Justice may help with an immigration case.
